Materials Needed

This free crochet feather pattern can be made with any cotton yarn and a crochet hook without a handle in approximately 5 mm.  You will need AT LEAST two colors of yarn.

2 Sizes Of Feathers

This crochet feather pattern has instructions for two different sizes of the crochet feather pattern. The larger feather measures 17 cm in length and the smaller feather measures 13 cm in length.

Tunisian Crochet Tips

Tunisian crochet is different from standard crochet and uses a few different stitches from standard crochet. The technique is very fun, and if you haven’t tried Tunisian crochet, you definitely should.

For this free crochet feather pattern, you will need to know the Tunisian simple stitch and the slip stitch. You will also need to understand what yarn over means in terms of crochet.

Special Techniques or Stitches you will need to know are the “end stitch”, the “make 1-top bar” and the “Tunisian Simple Stitch 3 Together.”

Large Crochet Feather Pattern (with color change instructions)

To Begin:

CHAIN 11 using color A. Go to the SECOND chain from the hook. From the TOP LOOP of chain, pick up a loop and into each chain through to the end of row. You should have 11 loops on your hook. Return.

Row 2:

MAKE 1 TOP BAR. Then TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch. The Tunisian simple stitch 3 together. Then MAKE 1 TOP BAR. Make END STITCH. Should have 11 loops on hook. Return.

Row 3: 

Repeat Row 2, on last 2 loops of return, change to Color B.

Row 4: 

Repeat Row 2 with Color B. On last 2 loops of return, CHANGE to Color A.

Row 5: 

Repeat Row 2 with Color A. On last 2 loops of return, CHANGE to color B.

Row 6:  

Repeat Row 2 with Color B. On last 2 loops of return, CHANGE to color A.

Row 7 – 10:

Repeat Row 2 with Color A.

Row 11:

Repeat Row 2 with Color A. On last 2 loops of return, CHANGE to color B.

Row 12:

Repeat Row 2 with Color B. On last 2 loops of return, CHANGE to color A.

Row 13:

With Color A—TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch 3 stitches. Tunisian simple stitch 3 stitches together. TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch 3 stitches. Work END STITCH. You should have 9 loops on your hook. On last 2 loops of return, CHANGE to color B.

Row 14:

With Color B—MAKE 1 TOP BAR. TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch 2 stitches. Then TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch 3 stitches together. TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch 2 stitches. Make END STITCH. You should have 9 loops on your hook. On last two loops of return, CHANGE to Color A.

The remainder of the feather is in COLOR A.

Row 15 – 17:

With Color A—MAKE 1 TOP BAR. TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch 2 stitches. Then TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch 3 stitches together. TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch 2 stitches. Make 1 top bar. Make END STITCH. You should have 9 loops on your hook. Return.

Row 18:

TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch 2 stitches. TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch 3 stitches together. TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch 2 stitches. Make END STITCH. You should have 7 loops on your hook. Return.

Row 19:

MAKE 1 TOP BAR. TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch 1 stitch. Then TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch 3 stitches together. TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch 1 stitch. Make 1 top bar. Make END STITCH. You should have 7 loops on your hook. Return.

Row 20:

TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch 1 stitch. TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch 3 stitches together. TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch 1 stitch. Make the END STITCH. You should have 5 loops on your hook. Return.

Row 21:

TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch 3 stitches together. Make END STITCH. You should have 3 loops on your hook. Return. Pull up yarn through remaining three loops on your hook.

Then 6 chain stitches. Return back down the chain, slip stitch through each chain stitch. Fasten off. Weave in the loose ends from your color changes.

Small Crochet Feather Pattern (without color change instructions)

 For this crochet feather pattern, you will use only one color. As an option, you can embroider other colors onto the finished feather.

Row 1:

(foundation row) To begin, CHAIN 9 stitches. Insert Tunisian hook into the top loops of each CHAIN beginning from the 2nd CHAIN stitch from the hook. You should have 9 loops on your hook. Return.

Row 2 – 10: 

MAKE 1 TOP BAR. Then 2 TUNISIAN SIMPLE STITCHES. Then TUNISIAN SIMPLE STITCH 3 stitches together. 2 more TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitches. MAKE 1 TOP BAR. Make END STITCH. You should have 9 loops on your hook. Return.

Row 11:

2 stitches of TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch. Then TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch 3 stitches together. Make END STITCH. You should have 7 loops on your hook. Return.

Row 12 – 13:

MAKE 1 TOP BAR. Then 1 TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch. TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch 3 stitches together. 1 TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch. MAKE 1 TOP BAR. Make END STITCH. You should have 7 loops on your hook. Return.

Row 14:

1 TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch. Stitch together 3 TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitches. 1 TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitch. Make END STITCH. You should have 5 loops on your hook. Return.

Row 15:

Stitch together 3 TUNISIAN SIMPLE stitches. Make END STITCH. You should have 3 loops on your hook. Return. Pull yarn all the way through the remaining 3 loops on hook. Chain 6 stitches and slip stitch back through 6 chain stitches. Fasten off the end. Weave in any loose ends.

The Crochet Feather End Stitch

The end stitch is made by inserting the hook under the last vertical loop and the bar exactly behind it, which creates TWO loops on the hook. YARN OVER and bring up another loop. This should leave ONE loop on the hook and create the end stitch.

The Make 1-Top Bar

Find the horizontal bar before the next stitch and insert the hook under the top loop. YARN OVER. Then draw up the loop and leave extra loop on the hook.

The Tunisian Simple Stitch 3 Together

For the Tunisian Simple Stitch 3 Together you will insert the hook into the next THREE stitches. YARN OVER. Then draw up the loop. This should leave ONE loop on the hook.
