5 Spike Crochet Star Stitch Tutorial

The 5-Spike Crochet Star Stitch Tutorial creates star-burst like stitches. It is also sometimes called “Marguerite stitch”, “Daisy stitch”, or “Spiked cluster stitch”. The name of the stitch itself, gives the idea how one will create the “star” by using clusters of “spikes”.

The star stitch in general, has many forms. The 5-Spike Crochet Star Stitch Tutorial is one that’s beginner friendly with fairly simple repetitive steps. By learning this, you will get an idea how to do the other star stitch variations as well!

5-Spike Star Stitch Crochet Instructions

To start, make a foundation of chain stitches in multiples of 2 and 1.

Row 1: Begin with snatching a loop from the 2nd chain from your hook. Do the same in the next 4 chains so you’ll end up with 6 loops on your hook. Yarn over. Pull through all the loops then chain 1. Chain 1 will look like the middle hole in the star.

Take a loop in the “hole” of the last star. Pick up a loop through the previous loop of the last star stitch. In the same chain as the previous loop of the last star, take a loop. For the next 2 chains, do the same picking up. Now, you have 6 loops on your hook. Yarn over. Pull through all the loops then chain 1. Chain 1 will look like the middle hole in the star.

All across, do the last paragraph again. In the same chain as the previous loop of the last star, make 1 hdc.

Flip your crochet.

Row 2: Start with a chain 1 and 1 sc in the “hole” of the first star stitch. In the next star’s “hole”, do 2 sc. Repeat the 2 sc all across. In the turning chain, do 1 sc.

Flip your crochet again.

Row 3: Create 2 chains. In the front of the 2nd chain from the hook, take up a loop. Do the same picking up in the back strand of the same chain. In the next 3 stitches, pick a loop in each. By now, you have 6 loops on the hook. Yarn over. Pull through all the loops then chain 1. Chain 1 will look like the middle hole in the star.

Get a loop from the “hole” of the recent star. In the previous loop of the last star, pick up a loop through. In the same stitch as the previous loop of the recent star, pick up a loop through. To end up with 6 loops on your hook, take up a loop in the next 2 stitches. Yarn over. Pull through all the loops then chain 1. Chain 1 will look like the middle hole in the star.

All across, do the last paragraph again. In the same chain as the previous loop of the last star, make 1 hdc.

Do Row 2 and 3 over and over until you reach your target pattern length.
